You can't go wrong with music by the Swingin' Medallions, followed by fireworks.
The sixth annual Labor Day Beach Bash on the Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion is a sure way to celebrate the holiday and say goodbye to summer.
"The event is family friendly," says Casey Sloane, special events manager for the Tybee Island Tourism Council.
"It was first started to add something to our end of summer, to bring a little bit more to the beach that weekend," she says. "We want to get people out onto the beach that day."
The Swingin' Medallions always draw a crowd. The band has performed live with Bruce Springsteen and been featured in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
"Everybody loves the Swingin' Medallions," Sloane says. "They are so much fun.
"They play everything from back in the day. They have a nostalgic flavor, but they also have current hits, too. The acrobatics they perform are just unbelievable.
"Everybody has a good time," she says. "You just can't find anybody better."
Folks should bring their own tables and drinks to sit and enjoy the ocean breezes on the beach; however, tables and chairs will not be permitted under the pavilion. Coolers also can be brought to the beach, but are not permitted under the pavilion.
The fishing pier will be closed from midnight Aug. 31 through 5 a.m. Sept. 2. The fireworks, which will start about 9:15 p.m., will be visible from the pier, the beach or anywhere on Tybee Island after dark.
An estimated 3,000 people gathered on the pier for last year's celebration.
"We had way more than that on the beach and in the restaurants," Sloane says. "It's a lot of fun, so we get a lot of people that come out."
