It is one of the most popular ballets in the world, and on Jan. 7, the State Ballet Theatre of Russia will present a magical production of “Swan Lake” at Johnny Mercer Theatre.
The ballet company was founded by Maya Plisetskaya, the legendary dancer and former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theater Ballet, who died in 2015 at the age of 89. The State Ballet Theater of Russia is now under the direction of award-winning dancer and Moiseyev dance company soloist Nikolay Anokhin.
Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-76, “Swan Lake” tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Based on Russian folklore and German legend, it follows a heroic young prince as he works to free the beautiful swan maiden from the evil spell.
This will be a full-scale production, set to the music of Tchaikovsky. The production features 50 dancers and is part of the State Ballet Theatre of Russia’s national tour of “Swan Lake.”
