Imagine combining a 5K race with huge, inflatable bounce obstacles.
Savannah’s love for running made the city a great choice for the Insane Inflatable 5K, said Nick Germano, director of events.
“Definitely a cool concept. This is going to be our fourth year doing the race,” said Germano, “and we are nationwide. Definitely a lot of fun.”
This is the first time the Insane Inflatable 5K has come to Savannah.
“We definitely wanted to check out that city and try to put a race on there … It’ll be exciting.” Germano said planning takes a year in advance.
“We have to find the right venue, we have to work with the city on the permitting we need,” he said. “Leading up to the event, we have to plan the routing of the trucks, and logistics, the water, the snacks, all of that fun stuff that goes into putting on a 5K race.”
He added they looked at the running scene in the area.
“There is good support from local running clubs in Savannah,” he said. “We wanted to try to reach out to them. We had success last year in Macon and Atlanta. We thought Savannah would be a good fit for our race.”
The Insane Inflatable 5K race is open to all age groups, although you must be 42 inches tall to participate.
They set up 11 inflatable obstacles throughout the 3.1 mile course. Before and after the race, the festival area features a registration tent, merchandise tent, bag check and vendor booths.
“The midway festival area is the center of the event. It is where people hang out and party with everyone beginning and finishing their race,” Germano said.
Each wave of runners consists of 300 people, starting every 15 minutes. Germano said they have a wide range of participants, from families to college-aged students and more.
“A lot of people tend to sign up in groups and hang together, because it is a lot more fun to get out there and bounce around with a bunch of buddies than it is to just do it by yourself.”
The race is not timed, and he encourages people to take their time and enjoy the obstacles.
“Many of the people who come out to our race are first-time runners and are new to fitness,” he said. “This is an exciting way for them to start that journey.
“It is the most fun you will have exercising and doing something active.”
