Dave Ramsey, well known for books such as "The Total Money Makeover," his Financial Peace University program and his radio show, is on a mission to help people understand financial literacy.
Ramsey will be appearing live at Compassion Christian Church's Henderson Campus for two morning sermons Jan. 7 to jumpstart the local Financial Peace University.
"I'm really looking forward to it," said Ramsey. "The church is about to kick off Financial Peace University and that means a lot of lives are about to be changed. FPU is a nine-week step-by-step class that teaches people how to handle money God's ways. I can't think of a better way to start the new year."
Ramsey's goal is to help people understand how to become more financially stable and get out of the paycheck-to-paycheck worries, which in turn allows people to give back more.
"What a tremendous opportunity this is to help hurting people," he said. "Imagine what could be done for the Kingdom if money wasn't being wasted on consumer debt. Imagine getting rid of the paycheck-to-paycheck stress, paying off debt. Learn how to invest and build wealth so you can be outrageously generous with your giving."
One of the best goals Ramsey encourages people to work toward is the creation of an emergency fund.
"The first thing you have to do is get mad. Not in an unhealthy way, but you've got to get to the point where you say, 'I've had it. I'm not going to live like this anymore,'" he said. "Then you'll be motivated, fired up, to save $1,000 starter emergency fund, sell so much stuff the kids think they're next, list your debts smallest to largest and start attacking them one by one. Your biggest wealth-building tool is your income and when people begin to believe, they can do amazing things. We see it every day."
Attendees of Financial Peace University will learn how to budget and track where every dollar is spent.
"Financial Peace University has been around for more than 20 years, and this year, we've added some new things to make it better," Ramsey said. "Now, along with the nine-week class, you get online access to the video lessons for a year, plus FPU attendees get our free budgeting tool, EveryDollar. It makes budgeting easy by helping you track every dollar, every month from your iPhone, Android or home computer.
"There's never been a better to time to get started!"
