On May 11, people will pucker up for a good cause at the Rotary Club of Savannah East's fourth annual OH LIP ICS literacy fundraiser.
This year's event, held at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, will benefit the Royce Learning Center and the GED program at Savannah Technical College.
This one-of-a-kind night will feature a fashion show with models dressed in sports attire from soccer players to fishermen combined with a live auction for high-end lipsticks. Donna Shea, president of the Rotary Club of Savannah East, says the idea for a lipstick auction was born from a member who is a makeup artist with ties to high-end cosmetic companies. The event draws almost 200 people each year and the lipsticks can sell for upward of $600.
"The models come out with the lipsticks and people are given a chance to test them out. And yes, some people do test them out with kisses," says Shea. "The Rotary Club can be an old-fashioned and conservative organization, but this idea was different, so we gave it a shot."
The Rotary Club is one of the major forces in world-wide literacy, and the Rotary Club of Savannah East has raised more than $40,000 in the past three years for local organizations and businesses that support literacy awareness, including the children's summer reading program at the Live Oak Public Library. This year, along with Royce Learning Center the proceeds will benefit the GED program at Savannah Technical College.
"We were floored to find out that it cost almost $300 to take the GED exam, so a large portion of the night's proceeds will benefit test costs and preparation," says Shea. "It's not about the lipstick and it's not about the fashion, it's about raising awareness of literacy in a fun and energetic environment."
Along with food, drinks and tasty desserts, the night will also include a raffle with a chance to win a night at the Marriott and box seats for a Sand Gnats game.
"It's a fun and unusual event," says Shea, "It may sound a little strange, but give it a try."
