American Traditions Competition to collaborate with Savannah VOICE Fest in 2017

24 May 2016

The American Traditions Competition has announced a new collaboration with the Savannah VOICE Festival.

At the 2017 competition, the Sherrill Milnes American Opera Award will be given to the contestant who sings the best American opera aria during the ATC. The winning singer will also secure an opportunity to sing in the 2017 season of the Savannah VOICE Festival, along with a prize of $500.

“As we enter our fourth year, it seemed fitting to dedicate an award to honor my husband, legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes,” said Savannah VOICE Festival co-founder Maria Zouves. “As artistic director and co-founder of the festival, he brings over four decades of experience to Savannah.”

This American Traditions Competition already boasts a Ben Tucker Jazz Award, Johnny Mercer Award and prize money to vocalists of more than $44,000,including the Gold Medal Award with a prize of $12,000.

The ATC’s 24th season will run from Feb. 20-24, 2017, at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, with the master class and finals taking place at the Historic Savannah Theatre. GPB’s Celeste Headlee will again serve as emcee for the finals.
