Tybee Tales: Celebrate summer with lighthouse sunset tours

30 May 2017

Summer is back on Tybee, and with it comes sunset tours of the historic Tybee Island Light Station.

Sunset tours are the perfect opportunity to experience the lighthouse from a different perspective. These small, private tours last about an hour and a half and include a climb to the top of the Tybee Island Lighthouse, with the opportunity to explore the head keeper’s cottage, second assistant keeper’s cottage and summer cottage.

Tybee’s lighthouse is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia. In fact, it’s one of the most intact historic lighthouses remaining in America to this day. However, it wasn’t always in such great shape.

The original lighthouse was constructed in 1736, but that didn’t last long. Over the next 130 years, various versions of the lighthouse were destroyed by beach erosion, hurricanes and a little run-in with Confederate soldiers that resulted in the structure getting burnt to the ground in 1862.

Thankfully, the tower’s final reconstruction was finished a few years later and still remains to this day. This monumental structure now stands 154 feet tall and is considered to be one of the quintessential sights on the island.

If you have never made the 178-step trek to the top of the lighthouse, this is the perfect time to do so.

But reservations need to be made ASAP, because spots fill up fast. To make a reservation, call the Tybee Island Light Station at 912-786-5801. Tickets are $25 per person, and no children younger than 12 are permitted on this tour.
