‘Heavy Hitters of Comedy’ to feature popular comedians onstage in Savannah

04 Jul 2017

Carl Anthony Payne II is best known for his role as Cole Brown on the hit television series “Martin.”

On July 8, Payne is going to host “Heavy Hitters of Comedy” at the Savannah Civic Center’s Johnny Mercer Theatre. The evening will feature comedians Shawty Shawty, DC Young Fly and Spank Horton.

A stage and television actor, producer and director, Payne studied acting at the First All Children’s Theater, an off-Broadway repertory company. He is a graduate of the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City and Howard University.

In addition to his role on “Martin,” Payne played Cockroach, Theo Huxtable’s best friend on the hit NBC series “The Cosby Show.” He also played Reynaldo St. James on the BET series “The Game.”

Besides touring as a stand-up comedian, Payne has directed and produced music videos, web series and short films. He has appeared on “The Rickey Smiley Show.”

Shawty Shawty is considered a pioneer of crunk comedy. He, too, is an actor in film and television, and demonstrated his improv skills on Nick Cannon’s “Wild ’n Out” show.

A veteran of “Showtime at the Apollo” and BET’s “Comic View,” Shawty has headlined the Super Comedy Jam tour. He has appeared in numerous rap music videos.

DC Young Fly is from Atlanta. In high school, he was known as a class clown and troublemaker, but after his brother was killed in 2011, he began pursuing a rap career.

Beginning in 2013, he made Vine videos of himself roasting other performers, including Kevin Hart, Welvin Da Great, LeBron James, Drake and Meek Mill. One of his YouTube videos, which roasted Michael Blackston, reached over 1 million views.

DC Young Fly made his film debut as Eric in David E. Talbert’s film “Almost Christmas,” which starred Kimberly Elise, Omar Epps, Danny Glover and Gabrielle Union. It was released in November 2016.

Will “Spank” Horton is a writer and actor, as well as a comedian. He is known for “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain,” “Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain” and “Plastic Cup Boyz.”
