Savannah VOICE Festival hosts free goodwill concert after hurricane

18 Oct 2016

What began as an autumn fundraiser for Savannah VOICE Festival quickly turned into a free concert for the community after Hurricane Matthew ripped through the Lowcountry.

“This is our time to share,” says Maria Zouves, who along with her husband, legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes, organizes the Savannah VOICE Festival. The pair and the talented singers involved in the yearly fest are hosting a free concert for their hurricane-affected community at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at Christ Church Episcopal in downtown Savannah.

Zouves says the group of renowned opera singers plans to perform for about 70 minutes, and the event will feature music from a variety of genres. Following the event, a short reception featuring cookies and punch will take place.

“This is part of our mission,” she explains. “We had planned a fundraiser at The Landings, so you can imagine when (the hurricane) hit, we feared for all our Savannah friends. It would have been the wrong thing to focus on us ... I feel like we are bringing joy in October; this is a time when everybody needs joy. This is not a good time to care about the dollar sign. We care about the people and people who love music as much as we do ...

“The artistic community cares so much about Savannah and this is our way to let Savannah know we care about them.”

She says their partners at Christ Church didn’t hesitate to offer their beautiful space for the event.

“We want to have an open door to the square that evening. We’ll have singers in Johnson Square to invite everyone into the sanctuary ... We plan to make a lot of beautiful music. We don’t want anything exchanged but hugs and well wishes.

“Art needs to be about art, and this is what we will focus on ... so they can forget for a minute about what’s going on. This is serious stuff ... and I wish we could do more.”

SVF will host another free concert at 5 p.m. Oct. 23 for their friends in Hilton Head, S.C. The event takes place at First Presbyterian Church, and donations will be accepted at the door to support SVF’s education and outreach efforts. The festival is a nonprofit that brings classical vocal excellence and beauty to the Savannah area every August through concerts, operas, educational presentations and community outreach in schools, hospitals and other institutions. All donations are tax-deductible and benefit community outreach and education programs.
