Do you enjoy 5Ks and drinking craft beer? Or maybe just one of the two? You can do both — or just one — at this year’s Savannah Craft Brew Races on March 10. This year's event kicks off at 2 p.m. at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center and features a leisurely run/walk ending with a three-hour craft beer festival.
The Craft Brew Races take place around the country and are presented by charity-minded Gray Matter Marketing. And according to Gray Matter's Lisa McCurdy, giving back to the community is an important part of every event they host.
"A portion of each ticket from this event goes to the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild," she explains. "It’s a way to support local craft brewers in Georgia and it’s a way to support all brewers big and small. For this event, we purchase all the beer so producers don’t have to give out free beer ...
"The event also offers brewers a chance to have excellent interaction with customers. That means we can get the smaller and newer folks in, which is important."
This year's event features 20 craft brewers, including local companies Service, Moon River, Southbound, Coastal Empire and Savannah River, along with Georgia brewers Pontoon, Viking Alchemist Meadery, SweetWater, Monday Night, Southern Sky and Oconee. Other craft breweries scheduled for the event include J Rockers, Bold Rock Hard Cider, Stone, Mighty Swell, Lagunitas, Southern Barrel, Kentucky Ale, Heavy Seas and Southern Prohibition.
Ticket combinations include 5K and beer fest, 5K and designated driver, festival only and designated driver. The event is for 21 and older only, even for designated driver tickets.
According to McCurdy, festival tickets include samples from all the brewers. There will also be food vendors with items for sale and live music. Designated drivers will get free soda and snacks. Other fun extras for the event include cool finisher medals for several divisions.
"And when everyone leaves, they get our custom-designed glass, which changes each year — that is always a crowd favorite."
