Springtime in Savannah is about as colorful as it gets around here. Streets are jammed with visitors, the weather is "Chamber of Commerce" gorgeous (most of the time) and there is always something to do. Especially when it comes to eating and liking.

If chicken wings are your thing, you need to join us March 23-24 at Wingfest on Hilton Head Island. It's the event's 22nd year and trust me when I tell you, it is a great one. If you love wings, of course.

A couple of dozen island restaurants participate. Judges select the best chicken wing and of course, the public is invited to purchase tickets to try as many as they’d like themselves. I am told it is extremely competitive every year. Restaurants don’t always win, either. Local firefighter entries have won in the past, as have some others you wouldn’t expect. Truth be told, I wish we could have a chicken wing event on this side of the river, but we don’t. So if you love them as much as I do, then you are just going to have to make the pretty drive over to Hilton Head Island and enjoy the day.

If crossing the bridge is not your thing (which I know is most of you), then you might want to come on out to the Southern Women’s Show over the weekend, March 23-25. It’s held every year at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center on Hutchinson Island — easy access and plenty of parking. As always, there is a ton to do and see and plenty to nibble on through the weekend.

Grammy Award-winning singer Patti LaBelle will be in Savannah on March 25 for the Southern Women’s Show. Yes, we all know her for her music, but she’s also made a name for herself for being quite passionate about food. She had a show on The Cooking Channel and is behind a popular line of pies and sweets. She’s also promoted healthy alternative items that have helped her while living with diabetes. It most certainly promises to be fun and entertaining, but a bit educational as well. I’ll be there. Should be a great time.

If you can’t make it Sunday for Ms. LaBelle, then perhaps you might want to pop in on Orchid Paulmeier. Of course, Orchid made a name for herself when she was a finalist on Season 7 of “Food Network Star.” Around here, she’s a household name. Her food, whether it’s barbecue or wings or anything in between, is always sensational. She will be conducting a cooking demo at the show this weekend. Check out southernshows.com for more information. And, yes, if you attend, you should wait for samples.

None of that float your boat? Then pop in on The Grey for one of its "Oyster Happy Hours." Best part? The place is pet friendly. The Grey hosts this event from 4-6 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Oysters of course, but other munchies are also available as well as beer and wine. The weather is perfect, and it's the perfect time to enjoy an evening with our friends at The Grey and congratulate Chef Mashama Bailey on being named a finalist for a James Beard Award.

That’s a full plate lineup. Plenty of options to enjoy during the most beautiful time of the year around here.

See you on TV,

Jesse
