Once upon a time not too long ago, I utilized this space to talk about the "Great American Hamburger" (which of course was first created in Germany).
Everyone loves them, most everyone eats them, and even still, other people can be flat-out defensive about them. I stated pretty clearly in that piece that my list was not a ranking. Nor was it a complete list of the best in town.
It was very simply a look at burgers in the area that you may, or may not, have known about that are very, very good.
Since then, I've received a good bit of "atta boy" correspondence - people who have taken my advice and enjoyed one of those relatively unknown burgers.
I also got some "you're an idiot" mail - people who questioned everything about my list, how it was created and how I could dare leave off their favorite.
Well, sometimes it just kinda happens that way. One person's treasure is another person's not-treasure, right?
With that as a backdrop, we've decided to have Savannah's finest face off in this city's first burger battle.
On July 5, as part of Savannah Waterfront's Fourth of July Weekend Festival, we are hosting the Eat It and Like It Burger Battle on the River. Ten of Savannah's best-known burgers will line up along the river, competing for the title of Savannah's best.
"This is going to be a very exciting event," according to Senea Crystal, managing partner of Eat It and Like It. "So many people have a reason why they love a particular burger. Now we'll get to see who measures up on a level playing field."
The burgers will be creative, funky and of course, straightforward.
Contestants are going to be judged on creativity, structure and taste.
No one wants a greasy, sloppy pile of mush falling onto a plate. These guys should be beautiful, and we think they will be.
Another component to this event will be the People's Choice Award.
Visitors to River Street will have the chance to sample the burgers that will be entered for judging that day.
One sample earns you a vote, and the burger that gets the most votes wins.
"We think it's important to give the general public a voice," Crystal says, "And not make this some untouchable uber-foodie type of event.
"Having four judges from various backgrounds is going to give us a chance to get a nice cross-section of the community in picking Savannah's best burger.
"Plus, we are going to have Eat It and Like It's Emmy-nominated film crew on the scene to document the whole thing for an episode in Season 3, which will premiere in September. We can't wait!"
The Eat It and Like It Burger Battle will happen from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 5. Entrants are lining up to compete, and we will be releasing the list very soon.
Talk about fireworks? This should be great!
