On your mark, get set, go write a play!

Well, they don't exactly say that, but that's essentially the idea behind A Late Summer Night's Play Festival at Muse Arts Warehouse.

Six plays will be written and produced in a clock-ticking 24-hour period. The event will feature local writers, directors and actors and will mark the fifth time performers have put together a 24-hour play festival-type show at the Muse.

Gabe Reynolds, a regular performer with the Muse's Odd Lot Comedy Troupe and other productions, is taking the reins this time around.

"We've got six area writers who will come to the Muse on Friday night ..." he said. "At 8 p.m., they will be given a theme that they have to incorporate into their play.

"We tell the writers, 'Don't come in with any preconceived ideas.' We want them to come in with a clean slate."

The writers have until 7 a.m. the next day to write a 10-minute play.

"At the end of the night, all scripts are proofed. They have to be family friendly, so we check to make sure nothing inappropriate is thrown in there," Reynolds said.

"The writer can then go home and get some sleep, unless they plan to stick around as an actor."

"At 8 a.m., a group of actors will arrive and get cast in the plays," Reynolds said. "The actors and directors have until that evening to memorize lines and blocking."

Reynolds said doors open at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 and tickets will be $10 at the door. Audiences will see all six plays performed back-to-back.

"In years past, I've written and acted for this event," Reynolds said. "The first year, it took me the entire time to write the script. I had never written anything in that short of time before.

"It was intimidating but fun ... It doesn't have to be perfect. You just have to get it done."

All proceeds from the event go to support the Muse Arts Warehouse, a nonprofit group committed to providing the community with affordable and accessible arts events.

"We just want to give back to (Muse proprietors) JinHi and Mark (Rand) who are wonderful people who do all kinds of wonderful things for our community," Reynolds said.
