There's a new theater company in town.

Bangers and Mash Theatre Works, founded by D.J. Queenan and Warren Heilman, will present "Falsettos" as its first production.

With music and lyrics by William Finn of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and book by James Lapine of "Into the Woods," the musical won two Tonys in 1992 for Best Book and Best Musical Score.

"We wanted to do productions that speak to our creative hearts and that present issues to adults," Queenan says. "I'm a drama teacher and have been for five years and love it, but I'm interested in doing theater that is not geared toward youth."

BMT seems dedicated to its goal, with the motto "Adult Food for the Stage!"

"We started the gears in motion last year," Queenan says. "We reserved time at Muse Arts Warehouse.

"Then we started to pick and choose and worked our way along to our auditions at the end of April."

"Falsettos" follows Marvin, who leaves his wife and young son to live with another man. His ex-wife marries his psychiatrist, and Marvin ends up alone.

Later, Marvin is reunited with his lover on the eve of his son's bar mitzvah.

"It's a fun and touching gay romp through love, sex and a bar mitzvah," Queenan says.

"'Falsettos' is a theater piece that has been on my heart for many, many years," he says. "It spoke to me as an artist, it spoke to me as a gay man, it spoke to me about family and love.

"It's about a family dissolving, and through the love of a child, coming back together again," Queenan says. "It's very heartwarming and very funny."

Queenan is directing the production and Heilman is doing musical production. The cast of seven includes six adults and one sixth-grader.

Members of the cast are Ray Ellis, Cecelia Arango, Dan Finn, Christopher Stanley, Finn Repella, Carol Melton and Josie Streiff, with design by Jeroy Hannah and Erin Muller.

"It's a difficult piece, very challenging artistically, but at the same time, the cast and production team has been amazing and so easy to work with," Queenan says. "We've assembled some of the most talented Savannah performers I've ever worked with. We had a of lot of help from our friends at the Bay Street Theater."
