Over the years, the Two Hundred Club of the Coastal Empire has given $1.8 million to help local families of fallen and critically injured law enforcement officers, EMS and firefighters. That amount doesn’t only include support for immediate needs, but also provides each family member of a fallen first responder with full college tuition, including room and board and books, according to Two Hundred Club President Mark Dana.

“We use the funds we raise so we can respond immediately to these families,” says Dana. “And 100 percent of every penny we raise goes to those families. We have no operating costs.”

Since 2001, they have served 70 families in 20 counties spread across Georgia and South Carolina.

One of the group’s biggest fundraisers is the annual Red, White & Blue BBQ. This year’s event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 21 in Ellis Square.

The family-friendly event features live music and award-winning barbecue. For a $10 minimum donation, guests will get “Savannah’s best barbecue,” baked beans, macaroni and cheese and a roll. Coca-Cola products, Service Brewing craft beer, Savannah Rae’s Popcorn and Leopold’s Ice Cream will also be available for purchase. Music will be provided by Keith and Jason, Stephen Rankin and Bottles N’ Cans.

And while the annual event in Ellis Square is a crowd favorite, Dana says his group added a new component to this year’s event by offering sales of smoked whole Boston butts ahead of the event.

Dana says they will also have an information booth at the barbecue so people can learn more about what the Two Hundred Club does for the community.

“It’s important to raise awareness and to spread the word — unfortunately we have to assume at some point tragedy will hit in one of the 20 counties we serve, and we want to be there to support those families.”
