The city of Savannah's Department of Cultural Affairs will offer art classes and workshops from Jan. 12-Feb. 20.

Registration is now open for day and evening sessions for children, teens and adults in all skill levels. Classes take place at the Department of Cultural Affairs Arts Studios, 9 W. Henry St.

Classes of three, four and six weeks are available, as well as weekend workshops. Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, jewelry, painting and drawing. New this year are classes in enameling jewelry, fused glass checkers, children's painting and introduction to sculpture and mixed media.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Credit cards are accepted. Class schedule and registration forms are available at www.savannahga.gov/arts or by calling 912-651-6783.

SCHEDULE

Teen Jewelry (four weeks)

Instructor: Jessica Duckworth

Ages 12 and older, 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 13-Feb. 3

This introductory class will teach young students the fundamentals of jewelry design. Students will work with wire wrapping, beading and other techniques to create necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Children's Clay (four weeks)

Ages 8-12, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 13-Feb. 3

This introductory clay class will teach young students the fundamentals of hand building and sculpture. Students will work with coils and slabs and a variety of glazes.

Children's Painting (six weeks)

This after-school painting class allows children to express themselves by using their creative imaginations in an educational and creative environment to produce great works of art. The class will focus on the fundamental skills of art making and will allow students to explore a wide variety of painting themes and styles.

Morning Mud for Toddlers (three weeks)

This is a perfect pottery play date! This class will allow for a creative ceramic experience to be shared by children and their parents. The class will focus on coil and slab construction as well as different decorative techniques. Each week we will explore a new creative idea with clay.

Introduction to Drawing (three weeks)

This class will explore drawing skills. Lessons will be planned around negative space, composition, depth perception and how materials reflect the interpretation of the object. From simple to more complex still-life compositions, students will work with a variety of arranged objects.

Introduction to Fused Glass (three weeks)

Join this fun, hands-on class, open to all levels from the beginner to those who want to learn more about various techniques in fused glass. You'll take home an assortment of finished works, from wall hangings to jewelry and functional art.

Introduction to Stained Glass (three weeks)

In this class students will learn all the basics of glass cutting, foiling and soldering together pieces of stained glass to create a finished work of art ready to hang in any window. All levels invited to join in the fun.

Metalsmithing and Lapidary

Introduction to Metalsmithing (six weeks)

This is an introductory course to jewelry design. The focus is on introducing basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will work with texture and surface altering metal techniques, cold connections and some basic soldering to create several pieces of jewelry.

Beginning Metalsmithing (six weeks)

Ages 17 and older, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 14-Feb. 18

This is an introductory course to metalsmithing. The focus is on introducing basic tools and techniques used by jewelers. Students will use both sterling silver and copper to create several pieces of jewelry. Basic soldering skills will also be taught. Expect to get your hands dirty!

Open Studio Metals (six weeks)

Open studio in the jewelry studio allows students time to practice skills learned in previous classes. Fee includes a supply packet and a knowledgeable instructor on hand for questions and advice. Prior class experience is required.

Beginning Wheel Throwing (six weeks)

This introductory class will teach you the basics of throwing clay on the potter's wheel. Trimming and decorative techniques will be taught to give each vessel its own flair. Students will work at their own pace and receive individual attention.

Introduction to Sculpture and Mixed Media (six weeks)

In this class, we will design sculptures to incorporate your favorite found objects. This is the perfect time to use those interesting finds in a creative way. Bring your own mixed media or choose from our collection.

Handbuilding (six weeks)

This handbuilding and sculpture class is open to all skill levels. This class will help develop basic skills in clay construction, glazing and decorative techniques. Learn techniques such as pinching, coiling and using slabs to make basic forms and will explore the use of tools, techniques and alternative finishes, creating abstract and realistic pieces.

Open Studio Ceramics (six weeks)
