The Premier Choir of the Savannah Children's Choir has been chosen to sing the Saturday evening mass at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on June 9.
"We are humbled by this honor," said Janet Wooten, artistic director of the SCC. While many choirs are given permission to do brief performances in Notre Dame, the honor of participating in the actual service is quite selective.
The choir will travel to France on June 4. While in France, they will also perform on June 6 (D Day) at the Normandy Memorial. They will sing a new composition by trombonist and composer Wycliffe Gordon, "A Soldier's Heart."
"From its inception, the Savannah Children's Choir has strived to provide unique and life-changing experiences for our children," said board chair Lukejohn Dickson.
"We look forward to representing Savannah in France this summer with two memorable performances," said co-founder and executive director Roger Moss.
The choir is accepting donations to defray some of the cost of the trip through gofundme.com. Those wishing to donate can also give directly at savannahchoir.org.
"The SCC is committed to providing these experiences to all children, regardless of family income. We are only able to do this through the generosity of our supporters," said managing director Jane Levy.
