The Queers have been tearing it up on the punk scene for more than 30 years, and they'll bring that energy to The Jinx on Friday the 13th.
The band has had a few dozen members over the years, but lead singer and guitarist Joe Queer has always been there, driving The Queers' sharp-edged, surf-influenced punk rock.
The New Hampshire-based band last played Savannah in early 2012. It was one of the tightest shows I saw all year. They will be supported by rock band Flat Tires from Hickory, N.C., and Athens-based Shehehe, a young band that cites influences of the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.
Tickets for the Sept. 13 show are $12 and will be available at the door at 127 W. Congress St. The music usually gets rolling at The Jinx around 10:30 p.m.
Last year's show by The Queers was at The Wormhole, which has a larger capacity than The Jinx. I don't know if The Jinx will sell out, but it's certainly possible, especially if word spreads among Savannah's young garage rockers.
The return of The Queers is just one highlight of an impressive weekend lineup.
Revival Fest on Sept. 14 features stunningly good touring acts, plus two top local bands: The Train Wrecks and The Accomplices.
Of the 10 out-of-town bands scheduled for Revival Fest, I'm most excited about the Cedric Burnside Project from Holly Springs, Miss.; Luella & The Sun from Nashville; and Field Report from Milwaukee.
At the 2013 Savannah Stopover, Field Report's complex, sometimes delicate music got a little overwhelmed by crowd noise, but the band's self-titled debut is one of the most cohesive albums I've heard in a long time.
Also on Sept. 14, Savannah Pride features a full lineup of entertainment in Forsyth Park, including an evening set by Cusses and an afternoon performance by the Christy Alan Band.
Of course, on any Saturday, you can also find live acts, including many tried and true local performers, at a couple of dozen venues in the city.
It's an exciting time to be covering music in Savannah.
