Savannah lip syncers battle it out for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

16 Jan 2018

Need a night of belly laughs, great music and and killer choreography, all for a good cause? Then check out the Original Savannah Lip Sync Battle Championship on Jan. 23 at Lucas Theatre. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Savannah.

“These people aren’t playing around! This is the real deal,” says 2017 champion and event co-founder Marcia Banes.

It started as a fundraising idea for the LLS local financial assistance program. But then six teams showed up and threw down hard while a crowd of hundreds cheered them on — and a new Savannah championship was born.

“We really didn’t know what to expect,” says Lauren Mathews, event co-founder and LLS campaign manager. “But we gained so many new supporters for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by letting people know what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, how awesome it is and how many steps forward we’re taking in actually curing blood cancer.”

Someone is diagnosed with blood cancer every 3 minutes. The cost of treatment is overwhelming. But even with insurance, the cost of repeated co-pays ranging from $30 to $300 snowballs and can quickly wipe out savings.

That’s where fundraisers like the Original Savannah Lip Sync Battle and co-pay assistance come into play. Last year in Georgia, LLS helped with nearly $2 million in financial assistance for those being treated for blood cancers.

The first local Lip Sync Battle gained so much attention for LLS, the national organization immediately started promoting the fundraiser to local chapters across the country. Here at home, the fervor was so intense, quarterly qualifiers were established to further raise funds and build excitement.

On Jan. 23, Banes will defend her title against Vinnie King from Huc-A-Poo’s, the Savannah Bananas, and Elyse, along with new qualifiers Dwayne Allen, the Imprincenator and the Bar Food Boys.

Banes promises to “bring it” while ringing in her 40th birthday onstage at the competition.

“I’m throwing down,” she says. “It’s my birthday and I’m using that for inspiration. I might even come out in my birthday suit. I’m not holding back.”

Celebrity judges Ashley Borders, Frank Sulkowski and Collin Moulton are judging for Best Choreography, Best Comedy and Best Overall Performance.

But the 2018 Original Savannah Lip Sync Battle champion will be chosen by the money raised. Each vote is $1, and guests can buy vote tickets at the venue or vote on Venmo by searching “LightThe_Night” and putting a competitor’s name in the notes section.

“The winner of this competition is the competitor who raises the most money,” says Banes. “We are here 100 percent to cure blood cancer, entertain the public and have a good time.”
