Unplugged: Savannah Music Festival, Southbound team up for special brew, Mipso concert

13 Feb 2018

There are a lot of promising young Americana bands out there, but you only have to listen to a few songs by Mipso to understand why the Chapel Hill, N.C.-based foursome is attracting so many fans.

The warmth and openness of the lyrics, the beauty of the vocal harmonies, the delicate choices in the instrumentation — all these qualities and more can be heard on their most recent album, the gorgeous “Coming Down the Mountain.”

I’ll confess that I had never heard of Mipso until they appeared on the 2018 Savannah Music Festival lineup, but I suspect I’ll be listening to them for a long time. With four albums behind them and a string of great gigs ahead, Mipso has a promising future.

Mipso will be performing Feb. 17 at Southbound Brewing Co. for the Rollin’ & Tumblin’ Vol. 2 Release Party. This is the fourth straight year the SMF and Southbound have partnered to release a springtime IPA in advance of the spring festival.

As you can read on the Facebook event page, the first 50 people who show up at Southbound will be given a 22-ounce bottle of the limited release Rollin’ & Stumblin’ DIPA.

Southbound will be serving pints and flights, and Chazito’s Latin Cuisine, which operates one of Savannah’s most-loved food trucks, will be serving, too. The event will also feature door prizes, including SMF tickets.

In addition to this weekend’s show, Mipso will also be among the bands playing at the SMF finale at Trustees’ Garden on April 14, with headliners Tedeschi Trucks Band, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Gillian Welch. Mipso will play an early afternoon set on the Morris Park Stage and an evening set on the Club Stage at the Morris Center.

Tickets for the Rollin’ & Tumblin’ Vol. 2 Release Party are $11.50 in advance and $16.50 at the door. Please note that the Savannah Box Office charges an additional fee for online advance orders, but there is no additional fee for advance tickets purchased in person or via phone at 912-525-5050.

Doors for the 21-plus event at Southbound open at 7:30 p.m. Mipso takes the stage at 8:30 p.m.
