Have you ever wanted to know how Tybee Island locals really live?
Well now you can at the Tybee Tour of Homes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6. On this tour, locals open their doors to the public so guests can take a peek inside some of the most beautiful homes Tybee Island has to offer. Proceeds from this year's tour will benefit Tybee Island Maritime Academy.
2017 marks the 20th year for Tybee Tour of Homes and it is shaping up to be one of the most diverse lineups we've ever seen. With a famous home, antique trailer and a varied selection of local homes, this year's tour is sure to impress.
One of the most anticipated houses on the tour is the iconic beachfront cottage featured in the Miley Cyrus film "The Last Song." For the first time since the making of the movie, people will have the opportunity to explore the inside of this massive 1920s home nestled on Tybee's peaceful Back River. Trust us, you do not want to miss this one.
The tour's impressive lineup continues with three colorful Mermaid Cottages: Seafoam Shanty, Jackie's Cottage and Mimi's Porch. Mermaid Cottage homes have been featured on the tour every year for the last 13 years, and there is a good reason for that.
"I like for our cottages to be pure," said Diane Kaufman, owner of Mermaid Cottages. "People love our homes because they represent quintessential Tybee. It's those perfect imperfections that make our cottages so appealing."
If you are looking to rent a newly built Mermaid mansion on Tybee Island, then you are out of luck, because that is not what Mermaid Cottages are about.
"Big houses aren't really our thing," said Kaufman. "We like to focus more of our attention on the restoration of smaller homes on the island."
These cozy Mermaid Cottages will have you feeling like you are on a Tybee vacation as soon as you walk in the door.
The tour will also include a newly constructed dream getaway big enough for the whole family, historic cottages built in the early 1900s and a restored 1964 vintage Airstream trailer.
Tickets are $40 per person and include admission to nine homes, a parking pass and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tybee Island Maritime Academy, 714 Lovell Ave. Guests can begin at the home of their choice and will be given a map, along with a list of homes.
