Wicked South Productions updates its scares each year

26 Sep 2017

Wicked South Productions burst on to the haunting scene last year, after Thomas McCormick hosted a home haunt for 10 years. The haunt became popular with the local community, and they have worked to improve this year’s attraction to scare people even more with Lot 13.

“I have just always enjoyed Halloween,” McCormick said. “I liked going to costume stores and local haunts when I was young. Then that continued as I got older. I liked buying Halloween props at the store, especially Spirit Halloween, then that moved onto making my own. As I filled all of my garage with props, I decided it was time to move to something bigger.”

Wicked South Productions’ Emeka Nwokeji said this is their second year creating a haunted house that is open to the public.

“For about a decade before we opened last year, Tom was a home haunter, hosting up to 500 people through his own yard, then later to include his neighbor’s yards,” Nwokeji said. “It seemed like a natural transition to open a haunted house.”

The crew collaborated to add a lot of new features from last year.

“Once the overall theme and type of room is decided, it then is time to find props. Props are the fun part. Props are important,” Nwokeji said. “Let’s say, if you are working on a bedroom, of course, you need a bed and some furniture, but the little details are important, too. The room needs pictures, a side table, a lamp, books; if it is a child’s room, toys … It has to have those things not only to look like a bedroom, but to feel real.”

Wicked South Productions works on scene sets year-round. They started on this year’s haunt in November.

The scarers come in a large variety of personalities, as well.

“There is no one set style or personality for haunters,” Nwokeji added. “We have haunters who are quiet and creep up, ones who are loud and in your face, some so absurd … This industry is about entertainment. The scare is a bonus, but the audience has to be entertained.”
