Savannah Children’s Museum transforms to magical world of Frogwarts

10 Oct 2017

Grab your wands and broomsticks and prepare to be sorted as the Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children’s Museum transform into a magical fall festival for Frogwarts, a “Harry Potter”-themed day of fun.

Frogwarts, a Magical Adventure, will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Georgia State Railroad Museum, 655 Louisville Road. Pre-registration is required. Coastal Heritage Society members receive access to early registration, an express check-in line and priority boarding for the Frogwarts Express train ride. Guests are encouraged to come in costume.

The day begins at the Railroad Museum with a ride on the Frogwarts Express, a real steam locomotive. Guests then arrive at the Frogwarts School of Magic on the grounds of the Savannah Children’s Museum, where they will make wands and be divided by the Sorting Hat into one of four houses: Croak, Hoppin, Ribbit or Slime.

The event also include classes for making potions, fortune telling, glow-in-the-dark fun, quill writing, herbology, magic with Professor Zyto, a scavenger hunt, and Quidditch.

According to Sara Boon, education specialist at Coastal Heritage Society, the event offers a wide range of opportunities for children to not only have fun, but also to learn.

She says the Georgia Reptile Society will bring several “magical creatures” and talk about different reptiles.

“We’ll also have our mobile garden where we’ll discuss herbology, and guests will have fun smelling certain herbs to guess what they are.”

Boon says the staff from Oatland Island Wildlife Center will lead a class in quill writing where guests can write letters. “They are also hoping to bring a live owl to add to the fun.”

And actors from Savannah Stage Company will perform as some of the most popular “Harry Potter” characters.

“We have also partnered with Oglethorpe Astronomical Association and they will bring their solar telescope and give lessons on the sun.”

Boon says one of their most popular classes is back — the potions class. “These are about 30 minutes each and they are all related to science. These are always a favorite activity at this event.”

Leopold’s Ice Cream will also have “Harry Potter”-inspired flavors.

The Frogwarts event is weather permitting, so it is recommended to check the Facebook page for up-to-date information. Tickets are non-refundable, unless the event is canceled for weather.
