Sometimes seeing is believing, and that's the idea behind the Historic Savannah Foundation's 12th annual Race for Preservation.

The scenic 5K and 10K race begins and ends in Forsyth Park and takes runners and walkers through five historic neighborhoods - Landmark District, Victorian District, Thomas Square Streetcar, Ardsley Park/Chatham Crescent and Parkside as well as historic Daffin Park. And according to Meghan Lowe, HSF director of development, the idea behind the unique course is to showcase the properties and historic areas of downtown that her group works to preserve.

"We want people to come away from this event with an appreciation for the historic districts, as well as an appreciation for the variety of architecture styles and buildings in the different historic districts the race takes them through. It's really, having an awareness of the different historic districts we have in Savannah."

The event starts at 8 a.m. Feb. 24. Register online at until Feb. 22 or during packet pick-up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 23 at Fleet Feet Sports on Waters Avenue. Day-of race registration is also available. A special $25 flat fee is available for military and first responders.

After the race, there will be beer from Moon River, post-race recovery from Chatham Orthopedic Associates, plus other drinks and snacks.

Lowe says all race proceeds benefit HSF's ongoing preservation work and that the race ties into their mission pretty well.

"Our mission is to save buildings, places and stories that define Savannah's past, present and future," she says. "A lot of people don't know⦠that historic Savannah goes well beyond downtown."

She also says the group's revolving fund purchases buildings. "And then we stabilize them and then sell them so that money goes back into our revolving fund.

"All along the race route are our revolving fund properties and others we have offered tax-rebate information on."

And as a runner, Lowe says she thinks the event is one of the best races in Savannah.

"I've run this race for 10 years now and it's one of my favorites in Savannah. ⦠Most runners love this run ⦠because of the course and it offers a 10K ⦠There are not a lot of 5Ks that go through these historic districts. We always receive positive feedback all around."
