CANCELED: COEDS, DieAlps! in label showcase at El-Rocko

06 Sep 2017

The New Granada Records showcase has been canceled due to Hurricane Irma.

Tampa-based New Granada Records was founded way back in 1994. Given the ongoing upheavals in the music industry, that’s an impressive run.

Today, New Granada still accepts unsolicited demos representing about 20 artists, including Savannah’s own COEDS, whose high-energy mix of punk, pop and garage rock have made them one of the most entertaining bands in the region.

COEDS’ “Thrill Me!” was one of the best albums released by a Savannah band in 2016. If you haven’t checked it out, you need to get on it.

And if you haven’t seen COEDS’ manic energy live yet, you can see the foursome perform with their New Granada labelmates DieAlps! at El-Rocko Lounge, 117 Whitaker St., on Sept. 9.

I’ve never seen the Tampa-based DieAlps! (pronounced “dee alps” — German for The Alps), but I hope to see the show after listening to their debut full-length album “Our City,” which was released in early August. The record is peppered with interesting choices — sharp lyrics, beautiful vocals, lyrical passages that build into orchestral rock. Good stuff.

As usual at El-Rocko, there is no cover for the New Granada showcase. Check the Facebook event page for likely start times. Regrettably, the show is the same night as Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears with Lightnin Malcolm at The Jinx, which you can read about elsewhere here in Do, but the venues are just a few blocks from each other.

El-Rocko also has a promising gig booked for Sept. 8 headlined by the Austin-based BAHAMACIDE, who are touring in support of their new EP “Taking Control.” They’ll be supported by Think No Think from Austin and Jeff Two-Names and the Born Agains, which might be the most entertaining punk band in Savannah.
