Having a tasty libation at the bar is a lovely way to spend an evening. Having a tasty libation and then meandering to another bar to enjoy another is a Savannah tradition.

These bar crawls are a classic sight along the squares of Savannah, whether they're soaked in Irish green during the springtime or adorned in cobwebs in autumn.

And the only thing better than taking in the gorgeous scenery with a stiff drink is doing it while giving back to others.

The 12 Bars of Christmas 5K Charity Bar Crawl will take place Dec. 20 for those selfless teetotalers looking to scratch that charitable itch we all feel during the holidays.

Beginning at 2 p.m. at McDonough's Restaurant & Lounge, each participant will get "Santa's List," which includes a dozen of Savannah's favorite watering holes, including 17Hundred90, The Rail Pub and more, ending at Savannah Smiles.

In addition to feeling the full weight of holiday cheer, the first 250 participants with a completed scorecard get a T-shirt.

But a chance at fancy bar-themed apparel isn't the only reason to take part: Venues will have drink specials exclusive to crawlers, and the $20 entry fee will also land you all sorts of presents from Santa, including free bar admission, a very stylish red hat (the better to identify you as a crawler) and plenty of other swag. To top it off, a portion of the proceeds go to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

And while it's happily encouraged, drinking is not required - so the drier of Savannah's 21-and-older residents are still welcome to participate in the good cheer.

The event takes place rain or shine, so bring your ID, cash/credit card and most importantly, your favorite tacky sweater.
