The second annual Up the Cup event will ring in the new year in the form of a to-go cup as the countdown to 2015.

"We started Up the Cup last year," said Carrie Bligh, executive director of the Savannah Waterfront Association. "We wanted to do some sort of countdown like the ball drop in Times Square, but we wanted to put a Savannah twist on it.

"As Savannahians, we love to grab our to-go cups and bring those along with us. It's kind of our version of the champagne bottle."

The to-go cup will be placed outside the Wet Willie's building on River Street.

The countdown for the six-foot to-go cup, decorated in festive lights, will start before midnight and will be followed by the traditional fireworks display.

"Last year it was a great success," Bligh said. "The police estimated that there were 50,000 people down here. The street was completely packed."

Due to last year's success, Bligh expects a similar-sized crowd at this second annual Up the Cup event, weather permitting.

"The events we host at Savannah Waterfront give folks a reason to come down and celebrate," Bligh said. "There's a little bit of everything for everyone of all ages down here. Everyone should be able to enjoy the wonderful event."

In addition to the bars and restaurants that will be open on River Street, beverages will also be served by the plaza, accompanied with music from a DJ.

"DJ MXM was such a hit on Halloween night," Bligh said. "He turned the plaza into a giant dance party and he'll be DJing again."

The celebration begins at 8 p.m. on Rousakis Plaza. Music will be complemented by a light show projected on buildings. At 11:30 p.m., the countdown begins.

"It's a fun event," Bligh said. "Last year, everyone was in a great, festive mood. We have a great fireworks display and the light show against the buildings will last throughout the night. People can come, meander down to River Street and watch us release the big cup at midnight."
