If you are looking to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year, you could easily and quickly spend more than you intended to. Celebrate with friends and family without breaking the bank by using these tips.
There are ways to create fun and lasting memories with loved ones without blowing your budget. You will find when you stay within your budget, you are able to relax more and really enjoy the holiday. There are ways to save on the green clothes you wear, food and even alcohol, if it’s part of your party menu. If you plan and prepare ahead of time, you will stay within your allocated budget.
If you plan to have friends or family over, consider having a potluck dinner. You make the main dish and then ask each family or friend who gets invited to bring a side dish. One way to keep everything organized is to create a private event on Facebook and invite your guests. You can then keep a running list so everyone can see who is bringing what. This will help eliminate multiple people bringing the same dish.
Skip going out
If crowds aren’t your thing, invite a few families over, stay in and save money. Fire up the grill, let the little ones help make decorations, and if you prefer to drink, have your guests bring their own. Need it to be green beer? Simply add a little green food coloring! If your guests are drinking, make sure each group has a designated driver or offer to call a taxi. Do not let your guests drive home if they have been drinking.
Hit up the $1 section at Target, shop through Oriental Trading, Dollar General and Dollar Tree, where you can find affordable and cute decorations. One thing to remember: less is more. Add a colored tablecloth, a few streamers and table toppers, and you are good to go.
Look around in your closet to see what clothing you have before you head out to buy a new shirt to celebrate. If you have a larger family, buy solid green shirts for a few bucks and let each member decorate a shirt with some paint and stencils. This is an easy and fun way to save money while still being festive.
Parades or free events
Head downtown for the annual Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade! This is a fun free event for you to get out with the family and enjoy the festivities. The parade is an annual tradition for our family and it allows us to spend time with our family and friends. Afterward, we all get together for a late lunch and let the kids play while the adults catch up.
If you plan on buying beer, make sure to look for rebates to help save some money. Apps like Ibotta or Checkout51 will sometimes have alcohol rebates that you can redeem after you buy your beer. This is a great way to keep a little extra money in your pocket if you plan on drinking during St. Patrick’s Day.
What fun ways do you use to save money while celebrating St. Patrick's Day? Do you make your own clothing, cook up affordable appetizers to serve, or do something totally different? Make sure to share your ideas with us on the Savvy Shopper Facebook page.
