It’s one of the most popular (and cutest) events in town — the Oktoberfest Wiener Dog Races at Morrell Park along the scenic Savannah waterfront.
People come from all over to watched their short-legged friends sprint to the finish line for prizes — and the costumes on some of these little guys will melt your heart.
That event, along with German brews and food, live music, local artisans, keg rolling races and family-friendly entertainment, are all part of the Savannah Waterfront Association’s 35th annual Oktoberfest taking place Oct. 5-7 on River Street. Admission is free to this yearly celebration of German heritage.
Oktoberfest kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday at Rousakis Plaza with opening ceremonies and the official “tapping of the keg."
Saturday begins early at 11 a.m. with the Wiener Dog Races and continues through 11 p.m. with live music, food vendors,a cornhole tournament, German beer garden and more. Race registration is available in advance online or you can register on-site starting at 9 a.m. All participating dogs must have proof of vaccinations.
There are also special pumpkin painting classes in Rousakis Plaza at the Waterfront Kidz Zone on Saturday and Sunday. Souvenir pumpkins are $10, with proceeds benefiting the Savannah Chapter of the March of Dimes.
The activities continue from 12:30-5 p.m. Sunday, with local favorites Liquid Ginger performing from 2-5 p.m. Go to riverstreetsavannah.com for a complete schedule of events.
