Comedians from around the country are preparing for an all-out Comic Battle in Savannah, competing for $1,000, and a maybe a chance to receive national attention, like on “America's Got Talent.”
Savannah Comedy Revue organizer Tom Paris is a comic who started at an early age. As a kid, he ran marathons, then served in the Air Force, and started playing music. From there, he jumped into theater and stand-up comedy. Paris has been in a couple of feature films, independent films and commercials, and started the Comic Battle nine years ago.
"In the past, contests were never fair," said Paris, "so nine years ago I began the comedy contest like no other.
"It had to be fair and compensated," he added, "getting jobs and a demo reel for comics to audition for other shows. And to offer a fourth place. Who said three strikes, you’re out?"
Paris said he cares about the comedians involved.
"Copy me. Kick me. Talk bad about me," he said. "In the end, we are all winners to overcome the obstacles.
"I love that it makes people happy, and It makes me happy to make them happy," said Paris. "Comics come from all over the nation: Arizona, Florida, North and South Carolina, Georgia, as far as California."
Local and regional celebrity judges from throughout the entertainment world will also be on hand.
Attendees can expect a wide range of laughs. Comics will be "battling for the fun and the money," as Paris put it.
The top three contestants will be determined by the judges, and the fourth-place winner will be chosen by the audience. Every contestant will be given a chance to be reviewed by talent scouts.
Paris said they have had success stories where several contestants had auditions with “America's Got Talent.” Others have been able to book comedy rooms in other states and with Savannah Comedy Revue. Several have booked roles in films and were able to join SAG-AFTRA.
"How exciting is that?" said Paris. "… As if they won the lottery and what did I get out of all this? I was part of one's dreams, and when they look back, they will remember how great a time we had shared together at Savannah Comedy Revue."
This year's Comic Battle is full, but Paris said they are looking for new talent for next year, so sign up for the 2019 contest by emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
"So you want to be the next winner, come on down. The stage awaits you."
