For over 15 years, Barrabas and the Junkanoo Tribe from The Bahamas have been traveling to Savannah and Tybee Island for the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
“They are the highlight of both parades for many people, and you can join the Junkanoo 'RUSH' at The Original Crab Shack daily between the Tybee parade and Savannah parade,” said Stephanie Hamilton, from The Original Crab Shack.Get Savannah arts and culture news delivered to your inbox: Sign up for our Dine Savannah and Do update newsletters
Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas and The Original Crab Shack wants to raise funds to help out their friends by hosting a fundraiser and sending the funds directly to the Junkanoo tribe.
“We were not able to ship goods directly to them, as donated material goods pass through the Bahamian government to be dispersed,” said Hamilton. “We are raising cash for Barabbas & the Junkanoo Tribe so that we can put the money directly in their hands, and they can buy what they need. Many of their members live throughout the Bahamian Islands, and were completely devastated by Hurricane Dorian.”
The fundraising event will take place at The Original Crab Shack on October 22nd from 6-9 p.m. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served from 6-8 p.m., and a cash bar with drink specials will be available.
“We will have a live auction hosted by Tony Malott the Hippie Auctioneer from Southeastern Trade & Auction Company in Statesboro from 7-8 p.m. with fantastic items available: vacation home rentals, condo rentals, Bahamian artwork, two spots on The Original Crab Shack float in the Savannah St. Patrick's Day parade in Junkanoo costume, the auction winner keeps the costumes, and more," said Hamilton. "Raffle winners will be drawn at 9 p.m. by Barabbas, who is joining us for the event."
They are also raffling a 2003 Mercedes SL-500 hardtop convertible, with tickets at $25 each or 5 for $100, an 883 CUSTOM 2001 Harley Davidson, and a Basket of Cheer.
Tickets for the car raffle, the Harley raffle, and barbecue dinners can be purchased online at www.thecrabshack.com/win. You can also make an online donation to the fundraiser on the website and cash or check donations can be made at any SunTrust bank to the account "Barabbas & the Junkanoo Tribe Bahamian Relief Fund."
