Not much else seems as connected to Christmas as storytelling and the magic of music, and with this year's Holiday Spectacular, the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus promises to provide both.

The annual celebration of everything festive kicks off with two days of celebration on Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Johnny Mercer Theater, located in the Savannah Civic Center. The program will be split into two parts with Roger Moss, co-founder of the Savannah Children's Choir, narrating "The Gift of the Magi" with the help of the Philharmonic and the Savannah Children's Choir. In the second part, the Savannah Philharmonic's chorus will join the Orchestra with a Motown Holiday Tribute — aided by American Traditions Vocal Competition Gold Medalist Mykal Kilgore.

"Often times music tells stories with a composition arranged musical notes – a music without lyrics," Savannah Philharmonic executive director Terri O'Neill said. "The Savannah Philharmonic will share the story of The Gift of the Gift, along with the story's narration by Savannah's own Roger Moss. Attendees can learn of the heartfelt sacrifices of Della and Jim, reflecting on the true meaning of love during this magical time of the year. No doubt, at the conclusion of the concert, everyone will leave the theatre with a new-found rhythm in their step after listening to our holiday tribute to Motown by Mykal Kilgore."

Joining the Philharmonic for this year's edition will be guest conductor Nadége Foofat. Foofat is a conductor, violinist, violist, and advocate for innovation in thought, action, music, and culture. In April 2018, Footfat made her conducting debut with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra in the 2018 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, selected for her “experience, talent, leadership potential, and commitment to a career in service to American orchestras” by the League of American Orchestras. O'Neill said Footfat is a welcome edition to this season's crowd of guest conductors for the Philharmonic. "Savannah Philharmonic is proud to welcome world-class guest conductors to the hostess city throughout the season. Nadége Foofat is a highly talented conductor, and we are looking forward to experiencing her energy as she leads our musicians in these holiday concert performances," she added.

As always, the event is a way to bring the family together for an evening for all ages. O'Neill said she finds the concert to always be one of the year's most wonderful celebrations. "In the spirit of giving, the Holiday Spectacular concert series is a celebration of thankfulness and joy; and The Savannah Philharmonic is proud to be able to bring folks together to experience the power of music. Thanks to our generous sponsors, we are able to offer reduced-price family packages and give tickets to nearly 500 active military families who serve our country," she said.
