Thanksgiving can be fun and even memorable, but it can also be quite expensive buying all those groceries and decorations. There are ways to save money if you are careful and do your homework.
Hands down the biggest way to save money on groceries for Thanksgiving is by taking advantage of holiday sales. Virtually every grocery store and supermarket have sales on various items leading up to both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
To save money, you need to keep a sharp eye out for which things go on sale at which stores and then go to those stores and buy the sale items before they run out. This is really important this year due to stock not being as accessible due to COVID-19.
For example, some stores put turkeys on sale a few weeks before the big day. Other stores wait until just a few days before the holiday to put their holiday menu items on sale.
Some of the bigger stores put all sorts of ingredients for baking on sale for the whole month of November. Read the sales flyers that come in the mail. You can also watch the television commercials or just take an occasional run through a grocery store on your way home from work. It may be more work, but if saving money is a high priority this year, it could pay off in a very big way.
By using these money saving techniques, you could wind up paying less than half of what you would if you just went out and bought everything on your list. The more things you plan to cook, and the more people you will be feeding, the more money you’ll save by doing some planning ahead of time.
Another way you can save money on Thanksgiving groceries is to use generic brands. Then you can compare generic prices between the different stores you visit. One way to do this is to go double shopping with a partner, like say a spouse, or perhaps a friend. You then go to one grocery store, while your partner goes to another store. You then talk to each other on your cell phones comparing prices.
This works for non-generic items as well and doing so can actually save you a lot of money because stores markup different items in different ways.
Finally, a good way to reduce grocery costs for Thanksgiving dinner is to plan your meal a little differently than you usually do. Think about how much the ingredients cost to make the menu items that you are planning to make . Some ingredients cost a lot, especially if you’re going to be serving a lot of people.
This year, cook both dinner and desserts that don’t involve expensive ingredients and you should be able to save a lot of money.
