The Savannah Art Association is soaring to new heights with a recently unveiled exhibit at the airport.
The new art show is currently on display in the Savannah Airport Art Gallery located within Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.
The summer exhibit’s main creative theme is "Life’s A Beach," with works by more than 20 local artists depicting scenery, objects, and wildlife found along the oceanfront of the Coastal Empire.
A secondary theme for the show spans the south wall of the gallery and is entitled "Savannah Area Scenes", featuring depictions of the charming ambiance and unique culture of the Hostess City.
Savannah Art Association officials say the exhibit is a great way to highlight the works of many talented local artists and the rich culture of the region which inspires them.
"We are so excited to have this new lineup of delightful artwork on display at the airport," says Carol Anderson, president of the Savannah Art Association.
The exhibit is something association members say will bring a little joy and inspiration to the daily airport visitors from both near and far.
"It is so refreshing to know that local artists continue to ply their craft in spite of the restrictions brought about by the pandemic. The work is truly inspired," Anderson added.
One work in particular stands out just by its sheer scale and detail alone - a one-of-a-kind multi-media sketch of the Savannah River waterfront by local artist Ivan Chow.
The highly-detailed exhibit measures more than 20 feet long and depicts an entire mile of the Savannah riverfront captured over the course of a single day, from sunrise to sunset.
The artist said the project was both a major undertaking and a real joy to work on.
"It was most definitely a complex, quarantine-generated project involving many moving parts," shared Chow, an award-winning local artist and architect.
"It became like a continuous therapeutic thread alongside the evolution of the pandemic," he added.
Both exhibits will remain on display in the Savannah Airport Art Gallery through the month of August. Parking is available in the airport garage, and admission to the gallery is free to the public. Much of the artwork on display is for sale and crafted by local artists.
Founded in 1920, the Savannah Art Association is the oldest continuously-operating art association in the state of Georgia.
The association exhibits artwork by more than 130 member-artists in galleries throughout Savannah, including the airport and at the association’s main gallery, located at 232 Bull St. on Chippewa Square.
