What’s Labor Day weekend without something sweet?

In this case we’re not talking about dessert, we’re talking about the sweet sounds of live music as veterans of the American Traditions Vocal Competition (ATC) present three days of musical food for the soul.

From Friday through Sunday, musical acts will come together to form the Porch Party outdoor concert lineup. A mix of private spaces and public places will make for an interesting genre-mix of sights and sounds. All venues will be seated with COVID-19 spacing restrictions in mind.

The opportunity to not only get back to doing what she loves but to do it for a live audience has everyone involved looking forward to the concert.

"I’m really excited to be able to share a fun and diverse program," said featured performer, former ATC contestant and recent addition to the Atlanta Opera Company Jasmine Habersham. "It’s nice to be with an audience, even if we’re going to be socially-distant."

ATC Artistic Director Mikki Sodergren added, "I think it’s going to be a really special event, not only to get back to a sense of normalcy, but to also celebrate Jasmine and her accomplishments. She’s such a fantastic vocalist."

Asked if she enjoys singing outdoors Habersham answered, "I enjoy performing outdoors but I must admit the only challenge I’ve faced in the past is bugs. I have had the uncomfortable case of having swallowed bugs when I sing."

"I enjoy singing outdoors when things go right," she laughed.

Beginning with a show at a private home on Wilmington Island, Habersham will kick things off accompanied by singer/songwriter Nat Zegree. The duo are scheduled to perform a medley of songs as part of their concert titled, "Classically American." Tickets for the event are $100 and will include appetizers. The show is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

In between a pair of paid shows there will be a free concert in the series. Habersham and Zegree will get together again Saturday, September 5 for a shorter performance in the Dinosaur Atrium at the Plant Riverside District (500 W. River Street). Habersham is ready to work with Zegree, whom she has competed against in the ATC in the recent past. "Nat’s fantastic and I’m looking forward to performing with him," she said. "I was blown away by his talent when we competed in ATC back in 2018."

The mini-concert is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and should run about 45 minutes.

Social-distancing will continue to be enforced and the concert is open to the public at large. Sodergren says the free concert is, if nothing else, a thank you to a city that has always supported ATC in the past.

"Savannah has been so good to us and we have been lucky the city has supported us so we wanted to find a way to give back and what better way to do that than to offer a free concert?" ATC hosted a similar affair for Independence Day weekend.

Zegree will go it alone Sunday, performing a one-man-show that will include some of his own songs like the ones included in his musical "Fly More Than You Fall," which is headed to Broadway. Zegree is familiar with Savannah after having performed here twice to sold out crowds in Dec. 2019.

Tickets for the concert are $100 and will include dessert from Savannah staples Two Smart Cookies and Leopold’s Ice Cream. The concert will take place at a private home within the Emerald Pointe community.

For some the concert series will be a nice way to celebrate the Labor Day weekend under what is a not so normal new normal. "I am looking forward to connecting to people again and I think people really need music at this time," said Habersham. "We need that connection."

Patrons will get exact addresses for concerts and parking instructions upon purchasing tickets. The smaller more private concerts are a way to get together while working to remain properly distant. "It’s kind of an exciting way to put together a group of people to make them feel safe while enjoying good music," said Sodergren.
