There are three types of women who listen to Heavy Metal: the women who discovers heavy metal music through an older brother, the one who discovers heavy metal music through a boyfriend, and the final one is the pack leader.
Laurin of the new local metal band, Steel Circuit, is definitely the third.Blood Moon by Steel Circuit
“It was Metallica for me. I honestly cannot remember which song I heard first but it was off their first album, ’Kill’Em All.’ I was pretty sheltered as far as heavy metal music. But when I was younger, every now and then I would catch Metallica on the local radio station and tried to get away with listening to all of it before my parents could hear it,” she said.
“They let me listen to Avril Lavigne until they overheard me repeat a cuss word while I was singing along. But from there on my curiosity obviously grew. I had some male friends who introduce me to Tool and had heard of Type O Negative by late middle school and then started diving deeper into older metal bands through high school like Testament, Slayer, and Anthrax, and never looked back for a second.
“Heavy metal music has definitely molded me into the woman I am today, and I owe a lot of my survival to it.”
Do Savannah met with Steel Circuit during one of those Savannah pouring down rain stormy afternoons. We all met at an old colonial and abandoned mansion, which really helped set the mood. Although we had permission to shoot in the property, we felt as if we were being watched as we shot around each room; only giving more energy and validity to new formed band who is releasing their first EP on Halloween.
Do Savannah: Can you describe your sound?
Steel Circuit: “Simply put, we are Heavy Metal!”
Do: How long ago did you form and who are the members?
Steel Circuit: “We've been together about a year now: Laurin on vocals, David on guitar, Gavin on drums and Justin on bass.”
Do: How did the band come together?
Steel Circuit: ‘We've worked together previously. We have known each other for a while and reconnected on social media.“
Do: What are the band’s musical influences?
Steel Circuit: “Our influences are all over! Type O Negative (Laurin); Soil Work and In Flames (David); My Dad, Maynard Jaymes Keenan, Chris Cornell, Yoko Kano, Jaco Pastorius, and Mashed Potatoes Johnson (Justin); Periphery, Misery Signals, and Killswitch Engage (Gavin).”
Do: Let us talk about the EP release and the single.
Steel Circuit: “Our new song is titled ’Blood Moon’ and it is about a female werewolf searching for her next mate and meal. We plan on releasing an EP on Halloween and are going to keep working on creating more beyond that.”
Do: Is there a recurring theme through the songs in the EP? More She Wolves?
Steel Circuit: (Laurin laughs) “No theme necessarily! We want to give a variety of subject matter but keep a consistent energy as well!”
Do: Any immediate plans? Festivals or Venues?
Steel Circuit: “We just want to produce great music and have fun while doing it, and we want to keep writing and creating. As far festivals, venues, concerts, and live streams go, we are down for anything and we plan on doing live streams in the near future!”
Do: How has COVID-19 and the pandemic affected the band?
Steel Circuit: “In the most respectful way possible, it has kind of helped us. Quite frankly has pissed us off. But that anger fueled more aggressive music from us that we are excited to bring to the dumpster fire that is 2020.”View this post on Instagram
